Abstract

Imam Al-Ghazali's theory on the objectives of Shariah (Maqasid al-Shariah) emphasizes the preservation of five essential elements for human well-being and societal harmony: religion (deen), life (nafs), intellect (aql), lineage (nasl), and wealth (maal). According to Al-Ghazali, the core aim of Shariah is to safeguard these necessities at three levels: necessities (daruriyyat), needs (hajiyyat), and enhancements (tahsiniyyat). He believed that any legal ruling must ultimately serve one of these objectives, ensuring justice, balance, and the common good. His framework laid the intellectual foundation for later scholars and continues to shape contemporary Islamic legal and ethical thought, especially in aligning law with human welfare.
