Abstract

Qirā’āt (Quranic readings) refer to the different ways in which the Quran has been recited throughout history. These variations are not merely differences in pronunciation but have significant implications for Islamic interpretation (Tafsir), jurisprudence (Fiqh), and Quranic sciences. This study explores the origins of Qirā’āt, their classification into Mutawātir (widely accepted) and Shādhdh (irregular) readings, and their role in shaping Islamic scholarship. Using an analytical, historical, and comparative approach, the research examines the works of prominent scholars like Imam Ibn al-Jazari, Imam Ibn Mujāhid, Imam Razi, and Imam Qurtubi to understand how Qirā’āt have been validated and applied in Islamic law. It highlights the role of Rasm Uthmani (the standardized Quranic script) in preserving the Quran’s authenticity and ensuring that the accepted Qirā’āt align with the Prophet’s recitation. The findings suggest that Qirā’āt have influenced key Islamic rulings on Wudu (ablution), inheritance, and other legal matters, demonstrating their importance beyond mere recitation. While Mutawātir Qirā’āt are used in Fiqh and Tafsir, Shādhdh Qirā’āt are primarily studied for linguistic and historical insights. The research underscores the contributions of Imam Ibn Mujāhid, who played a crucial role in standardizing Qirā’āt and distinguishing between authentic and unauthentic readings. Today, Qirā’āt have limited direct application in modern Islamic law but remain vital for Tafsir, Tajweed, and Quranic preservation. This study affirms that Qirā’āt are not just an oral tradition but an integral part of Islamic jurisprudence and Quranic interpretation, reinforcing the Quran’s linguistic and legal depth. Understanding these readings allows scholars and students to appreciate the diversity within the Quranic tradition and its impact on Islamic thought. While their influence on contemporary legal rulings has diminished, Qirā’āt continue to shape Quranic studies, linguistic research, and historical analysis, ensuring the Quran’s recitational integrity across generations.
